There is only one reason why I try to write about this topic. Coffee is my favorite. Tell me I’m addicted, but I’m not. For me, coffee is a best friend. Drinking a glass of orange-coffee make me feel happy in the morning and fresh to study at night. However, it’s not me I want to write about. I’m writing about my best friend, coffee.
As we know, in Indonesia, drinking coffee has became a culture. Our coffee ancestor is came from Sri Lanka and also the government of Holland used to plant coffee in Batavia, Sukabumi, and Bogor. Coffee was also planted in Jawa Timur, Jawa Tengah, Jawa Barat, Sumatra, and Sulawesi. Maybe that’s the reason why we can meet coffee so easily everywhere in Indonesia.
What do you think when you look into some coffee shops around you? Please don’t think about cappuccino, latte, or espresso. Let’s see, Indonesia also has many kinds of coffee that very interesting for you coffee-lovers. In Yogyakarta, we have Joss Coffee (Kopi Joss). Don’t think about soft creamy coffee like a cup of latte. Joss Coffee is made from hot thick black coffee and charcoal (arang –writer). The charcoal that is still fervent taken directly from stove then added to that glass of coffee. Soon the charcoal added into the glass of coffee, we will hear a sound like “joss”, and that’s the origin of name Joss Coffee. Feeling so interested, aren’t you?
Indonesia also have Goraka Coffee or Ginger Goraka that exist in Gorontalo, which their mix coffee and ginger in a glass. In some places, some coffee shops sell coffee that sown with chopped roasted walnut. Acehs also has a unique way to brew their coffee. Coffee brewed using a filter that looks like a sock. Then the coffee is poured in to move from one pot to another. The result is a very thick fragrant coffee without any coffee powder left. This brewing way has also spread to Meda, Batam, Pekanbaru, Padang, Jambi, Palembang, Pontianak, to Makassar.
Commonly, people in Indonesia choose their local coffee for their favorite. For example, there are Mandheling and Lintong from Sumatera. Mandheling name comes from an ethnic clan in Batak- Sumatra Utara, and Lintong comes from a name of place in Sumetera Utara. Furthermore, Aceh Tengah has Gayo coffee, which also comes from the name of an ethnic clan in Aceh. Gayo coffee, according to world coffee community, called as the best organic coffee in Indonesia. We should be proud of it!
Has anyone ever heard Luwak coffee? I heard it thousand times and my wish to drink it someday J. Luwak coffee is the highest price coffee originated from Sumatra, Indonesia. The main reason of this coffee’s expensiveness maybe comes from the unique process. The coffee seed is eaten by a mongoose (luwak –writer) or civet. However, they don’t digested all part of coffee their eat. The inside of the coffee seeds will then be out with their – sorry – feces. Because it has lasted in the mongoose digestive tract, the beans have undergone a brief fermentation by bacteria in his stomach that give additional unique taste. Moreover, mongoose has a unique ability to differ between good and damage coffee seed, so they can only eat the good one.
There are so many kind of coffee, and the variant of coffee will be very rich if we mix our local coffee with other types of coffee all over the world. We have Cappuccino, Coatepec, Oaxaca Pluma, Chiapas, Kona, and so many more. Well, we also can make our original unique coffee by ourself. For example, adding a spoon of palm sugar to your coffee and sowned it with chopped biscuits and named “Palming Biscuo” *whatever.
Coffee is addicting, making your teeth become yellow, and increasing your stroke risk?? Hold on. Firstly, coffee is not addicting. You are addicted, because you are suggested. Secondly, it’s true if you don’t brush your teeth at least twice a day. Lastly, yes, coffee is increasing your stroke risk (according to the research loaded in Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, 2002) if you drink the coffee 5 cups a day or equal with 600 mg caffeine, 8-15 days consecutively. Well, who will do that anyway? So, for all of coffee lover, let’s drink any coffee we want, as long as we don’t do it excessively. Doing everything exaggeratedly never had good impact to our body, mind, and heart. Good day! J
